GOITER
By Dra. Annabel Carungin
Thyroid Gland: a small part of organ located immediately in front of the trachea which secretes two important hormones, thyroxin and triodothyronine, that have a profound effect on the metabolic rate of the body. Complete lack of thyroid secretion usually caused the basal metabolic rate (BMR) to fall about 40% below normal and extreme excess of it can cause the BMR to rise as high as 60 to 100% above normal.
The thyroid hormones have 2 major effects on the body:
- An increase in the overall metabolic rate.
- In children, stimulation of growth.
Effect of thyroid hormone on specific bodily mechanisms:
1. On carbohydrate metabolism - Thyroid hormone stimulates almost all aspects of carbohydrate metabolism, including rapid uptake of glucose by the
cells, enhanced glycolysis, enhanced gluconeogenesis, increased rate of
absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and even increased insulin secretion with its resultant secondary effects on carbohydrate metabolism.
2. Effect on Fat metabolism - Lipids are mobilized from the fat tissue, which increases free fatty acid concentration in the plasma and thyroid hormone also greatly accelerates the oxidation of free fatty acids by the cells.
3. Effect on Blood and Liver Fats - Increased thyroid hormone decreases the
quantity of cholesterol, phospholipids and trigycerides in the blood even though it increases the free fatty acids.
4. Effect on Vitamin metabolism - Because thyroid hormones increase the
quantities of many of the different enzymes and because vitamins are essential past of some of the enzymes or coenzymes, thyroid hormone caused increased need for vitamins.
5. Effect on Basal Metabolic Rate - Because thyroid hormone increases
metabolism in most cells of the body (with the exception of the brain, retina, spleen, testes and lungs), excessive quantities of the hormone can occasionally increase the basal metabolic rate to as much as 60-100% above normal.
6. Effect on Body Weight - An increased thyroid hormone production
almost always decreases the body weight and vice versa, but these effects do not always occur, because thyroid hormone increase the appetite, and this may over balance the change in the metabolic rate.
7. Effect on the Heart Rate - The heart rate increased considerably more
under influence of thyroid hormone than would be expected simply because of the increased cardiac output.
Goiter - an enlargement of the thyroid gland which can be due to its increase or decrease function.
2 Common Diseases of the Thyroid Gland
I. Hyperthyroidism
-
This disorder occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid
-
hormone, resulting in an overactive metabolic state.
-
All of the body's processes speed up with this disorder.
-
Symptoms includes:
Nervousness
Irritability
Constant feeling of being hot
Increased perspiration
Insomnia and fatigue
Increased frequency of bowel
movements
Less frequent menstruation
Weakness
Hair and weight loss
Change in skin thickness
Separation of the nails from the nail
bed
Hand tremors
Heat intolerance
Rapid heartbeat
Goiter
Protruding eyeballs
-
It is sometimes also called thyrotoxicosis.
-
Lumps or tumors that form in the thyroid and disrupt hormone production can cause it. Infection or inflammation of the thyroid can cause temporary hyperthyroidism, as can certain prescription drugs.
II. Hypothyroidism
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Cold intolerance
? heart rate
Weight gain
Painful premenstrual periods
Milky nipple discharge
Fertility problems
Muscle weakness / cramps
Dry and Scaly skin
Yellow-orange skin coloration
Recurrent infections
Constipation
Depression
Difficulty concentrating
Slow speech
Goiter
Drooping / swollen eyes
Recommendations:
I. Hyperthyroidism
a. Eat plenty of the following foods: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens, peaches, pears, soybeans, spinach & turnips. They help to suppress thyroid hormone production.
b. Avoid dairy products for at least three months. Also avoid stimulants: coffee, tea, nicotine, and soft drinks.
c. Be wary of treatment with radioactive sodium iodine (iodine 131), which is often recommended for this condition. Severe side effects have been known to accompany the use of I-131. Also, do not rush into surgery. Try improving your diet first.
d. If a goiter affects breathing or swallowing, surgery may be needed to remove part or all of the thyroid. It maybe necessary to take thyroid hormone pills after surgery.
e. Do Biomagnet Therapy
1. Meridian Energizing Treatment
2. Daytime and Night time treatment
3. Drink negative magnetized H20 with MSO(Magnetizer Stabilized Oxygen)
II. Hypothyroidism
a. Include in the diet molasses, egg yolks, parsley, apricots, dates and prunes. Eat fish or chicken and raw milk and cheeses.
b. Eat the foods listed on I-(a) in moderation. If you have severe symptoms, omit these foods entirely. They may further suppress thyroid function.
c. Avoid processed and refined foods, including white flour and sugar.
d. Biomagnet Therapy
1. Positive 2-stack Power Wafers on thyroid for 15 minutes treatment 2-3x a day
2. Meridian Energizing treatment
3. Daytime sternum & night time treatment
4. Drink Magnetized Negative water
e. Consult a Doctor
