Carotene-rich foods have been found to have many health supporting benefits including providing important antioxidants to neutralize excess singlet oxygen radicals within our bodies. Alpha-carotene and beta-carotene are converted to vitamin A when the body needs this important nutrient. Carotenoids do not accumulate in the liver making them a safe, effective source of vitamin A. More than 600 different carotenoids have been identified in nature. The important food antioxidant carotenoids include alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, gamma carotene and lycopene. Carlson Caro-Plete is a rich mixture of carotenoids derived from the fruit of the palm and provides one of the highest known concentrations of natural alpha carotene, slightly higher than found in carrots. Also present are significant amounts of other food carotenoid antioxidants including gamma carotene and lycopene. Although beta-carotene is best known an in vitro study found alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, and lycopene to be more powerful antioxidants. Some scientists believe that natural carotene mixtures found in foods may be more beneficial than any single carotenoid.
